Pelicans
Surfing Pelican at Capitola Beach, CA
I have photographed pelicans for year. Just before snapping these photos I had said to myself, “I’m not interested in those today. There’s nothing they can show me right now.”
Sometimes it’s okay to be wrong.
Anchovies in Santa Cruz Harbor
Supposedly, uncharacteristically hot days will release whale poop from the ocean floor stimulating huge spawns of anchovies.
The water was so full of fish, this bird didn’t even have to dive. It literally stuck its head in the water from where it sat and came up with this.
Just the Tip
On this day, I’d gone out hoping to capture otters. They were there but too far out and on the wrong side of the sun to be photographed well. Then, as I turned to go feeling surprisingly disappointed at my luck, I noticed a flock of pelicans diving behind me
The colors are lightly edited but nothing was added or removed. I appreciate the minimal reflection of its beak on the surface of the water and the fact that I don’t believe a splash has started to form yet.
